Grand Opening of the REMORA Laboratory

On June 15 the Automation and Control Group is thrilled to officially open the doors of the REMORA Laboratory and welcomes public and private stakeholders with interests in robotics applied to the maritime sector to attend the event.

The REconfigurable MOdular Robotics for Aquatic environments (REMORA) project proposes the development of a disruptive underwater robotic system for autonomous inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) of marine structures and environments in confined waters. The REMORA robotic system features heterogeneous modular robots able to collaborate and physically connect with other robots, transport and utilize tools for maintenance and repair. The REMORA robotic system will be subsea resident thanks to a docking station enabling battery recharging, data transfer and self-repair. When fully developed these properties will provide the system with unique capabilities as adaptation of robotic morphology and functionality to the current mission, increased resiliency to faults and failures, and increased endurance leading to long-term autonomous operations.

Associate professor Roberto Galeazzi will share the vision of this new research and innovation activity, will present highlights of the past 1.5 year of development and will introduce potential uses of the REMORA technology. Following, the REMORA development team will demonstrate live the current capabilities of the reconfigurable modular robotic platform.
